This piece is based on the metaphor of wandering sheep being gathered by a shepherd. The four clarinets represent the problems of the sheep. In the bass clarinet we hear the voice of the shepherd, that solves these problems and calls the sheep together. This image occurs in the Bible quite often, where the sheep can be interpreted as wandering humans, and the shepherd as the saving Jesus. “I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak […]. I will shepherd the flock with justice.” - Ezekiel 34:16
