Zie, duisternis bedekt de wereld
en donkere wolken de volken.
Of men de blik naar boven richt,
of naar de aarde kijkt,
zie, er is benauwdheid en duisternis,
angstaanjagende donkerheid.
Wachter, hoe staat het met de nacht?
Wij verlangen naar licht, maar zie, er is duisternis;
naar glans, maar wij gaan in donkerheid.
Het volk dat in het duister dwaalt,
zal een groot licht zien.
In de schaduw van de dood
zal een licht schijnen.
Sta op, word verlicht, want uw licht komt
en de heerlijkheid van de HEERE gaat over u op.
Volken zullen naar het licht gaan
en koningen naar de glans van de dageraad.
De HEERE zal uw eeuwige licht zijn; eeuwig licht.
Translation
Behold, darkness covers the world
and dark clouds the peoples.
Whether one points the gaze upwards,
or looks to the earth,
behold, there is distress and darnkess,
terrifying darkness.
Watchman, what about the night?
We long for light, but behold, there is darkness;
for brightness, but we walk in darkness.
The people that wander in darkness,
shall see a great light.
In the shadow of death,
a light shall shine.
Arise, be enlightened, for your light comes
and the hlory of the LORD rises upon you.
Peoples shall go to the light
and kings to the brightness of the dawn.
The LORD shall be your eternal light; eternal light
